Tip of the week: Adding SoundCloud tracks to your BandPage Profile

It has come to our attention in recent weeks that some of you have had trouble getting SoundCloud tracks into your BandPage Profile. After some investigating we’ve discovered that there is a common misunderstanding amongst many of you BandPagers so we are here to help clarify a few things.  First and foremost,uploading a track from your computer and adding tracks from SoundCloud are essentially the same thing. Both processes require that you sync your BandPage Profile to a SoundCloud account.  However, the processes for doing so are a bit different.

Adding Tracks From SoundCloud:

When you click to add tracks from your SoundCloud account, you must first go through the process of syncing an existing SoundCloud account to your BandPage Profile. If you haven’t already sync’ed your SoundCloud account, you will be asked to log into SoundCloud using your SoundCloud credentials.  Once you have logged in, the list of the tracks currently in your SoundCloud library will pop up.  If there are tracks that aren’t already in your BandPage profile, you will have the ability to add them here.  Adding new tracks is as simple as clicking the check boxes next to the tracks you would like to add.  Once you have finished selecting your tracks, click “Next” and you are good to go!

Uploading Tracks From Your Computer:

When you click to upload from your computer, it technically still requires you to connect to your SoundCloud account. We provide this option as a way for you to set up a SoundCloud account quickly and easily – essentially skipping the step of having to go to SoundCloud.com first.  This is helpful for those musicians that don’t yet have a SoundCloud account.  By adding a track via your computer, you are able to quickly create a SoundCloud Account and immediately starting add tracks to your BandPage Profile.

It is important to remember that your BandPage Profile can only be connected to one SoundCloud account at a time. If you try to upload from your computer when you have already added tracks from your SoundCloud account, it won’t work. Similarly, if you try to connect to a SoundCloud account when you have already uploaded from your computer, this won’t work either. You need to either consolidate your music to one SoundCloud account, or disconnect the current account so that you can connect to the new one created by uploading from your computer. Promoting Your BandPage Experiences: Part 1 – Facebook

BandPage Experiences has been live for almost a few weeks now and we’re already learning a lot about what makes a good Experience tick.  We are finding that the best Experiences are not only exclusive and unique, but are also priced affordably and time limited.  It’s important to keep those factors in mind when developing your own Experiences.

In this upcoming series of 5 posts we are going to cover how and where to promote and market your Experience(s) once you have decided on what to offer your fans. This first post focuses on all the different ways you can share them on Facebook. Our next 4 posts will cover Twitter, YouTube, your mailing list, and good old word-of-mouth.

Promoting on Facebook

There’s no doubt that a musician should be active on Facebook – after all, it boasts over 1.06 Billion users, people are spending large parts of their day browsing it, and it’s one of the biggest sites where you can find fans. If you have the highest number of fans here, this should be the first place you go to promote your newly published Experiences.

Facebook is a great platform for posting rich media messages to your fans. It supports links, videos, photos, text, and more – which makes it ideal for promoting your Experiences. We recommend posting a short and genuine message to your fans, letting them know that you created an Experience for them.

Quick Tip! We suggest using trackable links like bit.ly or shortURL so you can track and measure the amount of traffic you are generating with your post, and optimize your message based on performance.

Different WAYS TO POST

Facebook supports links, videos, photos, text, and more. Mix and match different media in your posts to see what works for you and your fans. Below are some live examples of different ways to post on Facebook.

  • Embed the BandPage Experiences Link
    • Promote either your individual experience or your entire experiences page, depending on what your goals are and how many experiences you have.
    • Example: George Clinton from Parliament Funkadelic wanted to post about one of his shows in Sacramento, so he shared his individual experience page with a message aimed at his Sacramento fans.

  • Post a Related Photo
    • Take a screenshot or post an image related to your BandPage Experience, and link to  the experience in the text description. Images grab fans’ attentions quickly and they’ll be more likely to click through. Example: Slightly Stoopid below

  • Write a Genuine Message
    • Tell the story behind your offer; give some background; reach out to your fans in an engaging way. You can pair this with any kind of media – a photo, link, or video. Lay Low pairs her message with a link to her Experience in the example below.

Best Practices

  • Include Rich Media: Rich media posts are more likely to show up in fans’ news feeds and get clicked on. Photo posts are especially eye-catching and engaging.
  • Your Message Should Come From You: Fans respond more when your message is genuine and non-salesy. It’s always good to give your fans a story or more context by answering:
    • What are you offering?
    • What’s the story behind it?
    • Why is it cool and unique?
  • Give An Action Step: Every post should have an action step attached to it – “Check out my awesome offer!”, “Buy now before they’re sold out!” or “Go now – only 10 available!” are all good examples.
  • Always Be Optimizing. Watch the traffic and engagement you’re driving from each of your posts, and optimize towards the ones that are showing results. For example if adding an action step like “Check it out now!” is getting you a lot of clicks, then keep going with that. Different ways to optimize:
    • Time / Day of post
    • Action step in post
    • Type of media posted
    • Geographic location / types of people the post is targeted at (if you’re running ads)
  • “Star” Important Posts: You can star posts on your Timeline by hovering over the star shape on the top right corner. Starring posts makes them twice as wide and will draw your fans’ attention. Example: The Postelles below

Advertising on Facebook

If your post on Facebook didn’t generate the number of views or sales you wanted, Facebook offers some great advertising options.

  • Promoted Page Posts: Select a specific post on your page or automatically promote your most recent post to increase the number of your fans or friends of your fans it reaches. Example: Brian Fuente can promote his post to his fan base, and select his budget and reach.

  • Facebook Ads: Ads run along the right-hand side of a fan’s page. You can customize the message and image, as well as link off Facebook to your BandPage Experiences link. You can also target your ad to specific users by age, geographic location, other pages they’ve “liked”, and more.

Facebook Advertising Resources:

To recap, there are a number of different ways you can post about your Experiences on Facebook – links, text, photos, videos, and more. We recommend 1. writing a genuine message with a strong action step, 2. using strong visuals by posting media and/or “starring” your posts, and 3. looking at your viewership and clickthrough rates for posts and optimize towards the types that are successful. Tip of the Week: Logging Into Your BandPage

Did you know that the first product we ever made was BandPage on Facebook?   The original App was designed to provide musicians with an easy and effective way to share their music with fans on Facebook.

But that’s not all.  In recent months we have released a series of other products, like BandPage Everywhere, and BandPage Connect, to enable musicians to set up an online presence that reaches beyond just Facebook.  Because we started on Facebook, we implemented Facebook Connect as a way to identify our users.  This means that in order to use BandPage in any capacity, you must have a fan page on Facebook to connect it to.  

What does Facebook Connect do?  In a nutshell:  it is a system that aggregates Facebook User data from personal profiles and pages, and enables companies like ours to access and understand this information in order to identify who is using our product.  This means that when you log in to your BandPage, we are able to tell that you are who you say you are based on the information that we receive from Facebook Connect.

So why are you telling me this?  In recent weeks, some of you have had trouble logging in because you have deleted the Facebook page that your BandPage Profile is associated with.  While it is true that you no longer have to have an active BandPage on Facebook in order to have a BandPage Profile, we do still use Facebook Connect as a way to ID our users.  So even if you don’t have a BandPage App on the Facebook fan page associated with your BandPage Profile, you do still need to have that page in order to use BandPage.  If you delete the fan page, you remove our ability to know who you are; if we don’t know who you are, you can’t log in.

What if I don’t have Facebook and I want to use BandPage?  We know that Facebook isn’t ideal for all musicians, and that some even prefer not to use it entirely.  We are always exploring ways to improve the BandPage experience and updating our log in system is an important project- enabling musicians to sign up and have a BandPage Profile that is independent of Facebook Connect is definitely on our radar.  While we can’t give you an exact date, know that this is something in the not-so-distant future of BandPage.

Tip of the week: “Gating” tracks on your BandPage Profile

At BandPage not only are we dedicated to helping you share your music, tour dates, photos and videos with your fans but we are also dedicated to helping you make new ones.  Which is exactly what our “gating” features are meant to do.  Gating simply refers to asking a fan to take an action in order to gain access to a certain piece of content.  This action could range anywhere from “liking” your page, joining your email list or even tweeting about your new video.  In exchange for this action, a fan is given exclusive access to exclusive content like a song, video or photo.  Gating features are a great way for you to increase your number of page “likes,” help spread the word about a new song or video or gain new email addresses for your email list.  We do, however recommend being strategic when it comes to utilizing gating features.  If you are a developing artists hoping to build a fan base asking someone to “like” your page or give you their email address in exchange for the ability to stream a song may be counter-productive.  Instead, consider letting potential fans listen to your music for free.  If they like what they hear and want to own the mp3, than asking them for a page “like” or an email address in exchange for a free mp3 isn’t such too much of a stretch.  If you are an artist who has an established fan-base than you have room to be a bit more liberal with your gating.  You know fans are going to be excited to check out a new song or video so leveraging that excitement to help spread the word is a no-brainer.  Fans will have no problem tweeting or liking your page to access the new content which only helps grow your social reach.  Gating is a powerful feature, so use it wisely and experiment to see what works best for you.
